She started Kathak dance training at the tender age of six. After getting initial training from Sri Prabir Chakraborty, one of the eminent local guru she went to get talim in Jaipur Gharana and Bharatanatyam from Late Smritiranjan Ghosh, Dumdum, Kolkata. She also got training in Creative Dance format from Smt. Tanusree Shankar, renowned dancer of Kolkata. Thereafter, gradually she involved to expand her excellency in Kathak Dance under the guidance of renowned gurus- Smt. Maya Chatterjee, Late Pandit Omprakash Maharaj, Pandit Vijay Shankar , Smt Rani Karna, Smt. Saswati Sen and Pandit Birju Maharaj. She has also got training of Bharatanatyam from Sri Aditya Mitra, Kolkata.

She has completed Nritya Visharad and Bhaskar from Pracheen Kala Kendra/Chandigarh, and awarded Nritya Ratna (Gold Medal)(M.Muse) from Sarbo Bharatiya Sangeet O Sanskrity Porisad/Kolkata. She secured first position in the prestigious Dover Lane Dance Competition/Kolkata and All India Railway Dance Competition/Chennai. She stood second in the West Bengal State Music Academy dance competition/Kolkata. She has received Senior National Scholarship from Department of Culture, Govt. of India. She is also an 'A' Grade artist of Kolkata Doordarshan Kendra.

Smt. Shely Sarkar Karmakar has established “SHAILPIK DANCE CENTRE” at Kanchrapara & Barrackpore, Kolkata, West Bengal, India to promote the Kathak Dance format of Lucknow Gharana amongst the disciples of SHAILPIK DANCE CENTRE who are basically the residents of rural area. She has aroused a sense of cultural identity among numerous students of SHAILPIK DANCE CENTRE. She has also arranged to participate by her disciples in the workshops done by Pandit Birju Maharaj, Pandit Chitresh Das. It is a great pleasure that many of her disciples have already got various prestigious achievements, such as:-

stood 1^st & 2^nd in the West Bengal State Music Academy Dance Competition/Kolkata,
four number of students awarded Junior National Scholarship from Department of Culture, Govt. of India for consecutive four years,
for several times number of students stood 1^st, 2^nd & 3^rd positions in talent hunt organized by Jawaharlal Nehru Museum/Kolkata,
Stood 2^nd position in Kathak & 3rd in West Bengal state Youth festivals,
Students have performed Kathak dance in Kolkata Doordarshan Kendra(TV) and on many different stages. etc.

Group Dance performance (with students of SHAILPIK DANCE CENTRE) in Kathak dance Format with Rabindranath Tagore song in Basanta Utsav organized by Kolkata Dance Group Federation on 5^th April’2014 at Madhusudan Manch, Kolkata.

Duet dance performance (with student of SHAILPIK DANCE CENTRE) in Kabi Pranam Festival, organized by Kolkata Dance Group Federation on 29^th May’2014 at Sisir Manch, Kolkata.

Group (with students of SHAILPIK DANCE CENTRE) as well as solo performances for four times (2011, 2012, 2013 & 2014) at Sukanto Sadan, Barrackpore, Kolkata on the occasion of World Dance Day festival.

Duet kathak dance performed with Sri Ramaprasad Chattopadhyay at Gyan Manch, Kolkata in 1994.

Solo performance in 13^th NIKHIL BANERJEE MEMORIAL CONFERENCE held in 2005 at Sukanto Sadan, Barrackpore, Kolkata.

Solo performance in Uday Shankar Dance Festivals at Rabindra Sadan, Kolkata on 14.12.2004 organized by West Bengal Dance Group Federation.

Solo Kathak dance performed at Haldia Utsav, West Bengal, 2006.

Solo Kathak dance performed at International Trade Fair at Pragati Maidan, New Delhi.

Solo Kathak dance performed at Chennai Fest.

Solo Kathak dance performed at Kalarang Manch, Secundrabad.

Solo Kathak dance performed at Dhanbad Nritya Utsab, Jharkhand.

Participated in dance program “SHRISHTRI” –a production of PADATIK DANCE CENTRE, Kolkata, choreographed by Pandit Birju Maharaj, in Raichak, Medinipur, West Bengal.

(in Television) Performed twice in 1989 & 1999 telecasted in Channel DD7 “B” Grade (solo Kathak).

After solo performance organized by ERWWO got 1^st Prize from Hon’ble Governor of West Bengal at Sisir Manch/Kolkata.

Performed in opening ceremony of SAAF Games in front of President of India in the year 1987. etc…
